TITLE:                            Program Hydrologist

                                      (May be hired by contract)

 

LOCATION:                    Natural Resources Department – Ronan, MT.

 

SALARY:                        $25.34 to $29.42 per hour

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP) within the definition of the CSKT Drug Testing policy. The successful applicant, if not already employed by the Tribes must pass a pre-hire drug test and serve a mandatory six (6) month probationary period.

 

The Program Hydrologist is a full-time, highly technical, professional-level position working in the Tribes' Natural Resources Department in the Division of Water, Water Management Program. The incumbent will work primarily on surface water and groundwater resources under the direct supervision of the Supervisory Hydrologist and under the general direction of the Manager of the Division of Water.

DUTIES:

  • Perform various recurring hydrologic duties for the Program, including but not limited to, forest hydrology and NEPA analysis for timber sales; permit review for the Shoreline Protection Office; and hydrologic support for various Tribal programs.
  • Maintain responsible charge for complex technical elements of the Program's surface water measurement network including measurement location planning; equipment and measurement procedures; data management and analysis; and data publishing. This

includes keeping current on trends in the water measurement industry and applying these trends directly to the Programs' work.

  • Provide direct supervision to the Chief of Field Operations, and working through the Chief of Field Operations position, provide technical and planning oversight to the field hydrographers.
  • Provide final quality assurance/quality control for all Program data collection.
  • Provide technical training for field personnel in the proper methodology for collection and analysis of hydrologic data.
  • Prepare Standard Operating Procedures and data collection and data management procedures.
  • Complete various hydrologic data summaries as needed.
  • Complete interpretive hydrologic reports that may require judgement and application of various analytical techniques.
  • Collect stream discharge measurements using flow meters, hydraulic structures, and other hydrologic measurement devices by wading across streams, rivers, and canals on a monthly or more frequent basis, often at remote locations and often in adverse weather conditions.
  • Collect snowpack information during winter months in remote and difficult to access locations, often in adverse weather conditions.
  • Complete field surveying using engineering levels and GPS units at stream gaging sites and for in-stream surveys.
  • Complete project-specific field investigations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (AS REFLECTED ON THE TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION):

Masters of Science with two years of professional-level experience or Bachelors of Science with a minimum of five years of relevant professional level experience. College degree(s) must be in hydrologic sciences, engineering, or other closely related natural sciences with an emphasis on surface water hydrology.

 

Must possess a current valid driver's license and be insurable under the Tribes insurance policy. Also, must wear Tribal Government identification and safety apparel when conducting field activities.

  2. Proof of enrollment in a federally recognized Tribe if other than CSKT.
  3. If claiming veteran’s preference, a copy of DD214 must be submitted.
